About the museum

The museum was founded in 1953 by former mayor and honorary citizen Philipp Schäfer II. It is housed in the historic town hall of Erfelden, built in 1530. Since 1988 the Heimat- und Museumsverein Erfelden has cared for the archive, the collection and the exhibits.

The centerpiece is the almost completely preserved municipal archive from the 17th century until the 1977 municipal reform. The Swedish Room covers the strategically important Rhine crossing of the Swedish king Gustav Adolf in 1631. Other focuses are small-scale rural life, with tools from farming, crafts, fishing and brickmaking, Rhine fishermen and basket weavers, and the Rhine itself with old Rhine maps.

The collection also includes prehistoric and Neolithic finds and taxidermied animals from the Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue nature reserve. The association organizes guided tours, theme days and lectures.
