About the museum

The first local history museum in Crumstadt opened in 1965, when the then still independent municipality established it. To put the work on a broader footing, the Förderverein für Heimat und Geschichte Crumstadt im Ried (Friends' Association for Heritage and History of Crumstadt im Ried) was founded on November 20, 1990, and has run the museum ever since; as a registered association it has been listed in the register of associations since 2017.

The exhibition is housed in the old school, built between 1845 and 1847 directly behind the town hall. The permanent exhibition occupies two former classrooms on the second floor. During village renewal the building was connected to the town hall by a footbridge, so it has since also been reachable without barriers; special exhibitions can also be shown in the town hall's hall.

The collection comprises around 800 items and traces local history from the Neolithic and the Frankish period to the present. The centerpiece is the exceptionally well-preserved skeleton of the "Woman from the Sand" from the Middle Bronze Age, discovered east of Crumstadt in 1994, together with her jewelry grave goods. Also on display are everyday objects from crafts and trades, house records on the history of historic Crumstadt houses and, since 2016, the restored tower clock of the Protestant church.
