About the museum
The Hilchenbach City Museum goes back to a school and local heritage museum in the district of Allenbach, which grew out of school work and was housed in the attic of the old village school. When that building was demolished, the town took over the holdings under the Stiftung Paul Benfer. The museum opened in the Wilhelmsburg at the lower end of the market square on October 30, 1982.
The Wilhelmsburg was a Nassau state palace and was the seat of the local court until 1976. Today, alongside the actual local heritage museum, it houses several theme rooms that together tell the town’s story: from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, with industries such as meadow management, leather, felt and glue production, and mining, as well as political history. A dedicated area is devoted to the town’s best-known son, Johann Heinrich Jung, known as Jung-Stilling. In the hallway, display cases hold objects from the toy museum of the partner municipality of Seiffen in the Ore Mountains.
By the end of 2019, a total of 136,043 people had visited the house. Admission is free; tours can be arranged.
