About the museum
The Hemmoorium was opened in January 1995 and is run by the Geschichts- und Heimatverein Hemmoor (local history association). It recalls that the town gave its name to a geological stage. When chalk was quarried for cement production, the large chalk pit, today's Kreidesee (chalk lake), exposed layers containing fossils and the so-called Hemmoor rock, in which the “Hemmoorer Kugeln” were found. The Hemmoor stage belongs to the Lower Miocene and dates back roughly 15 to 19 million years.
Besides geology, the museum shows how the area has been settled since the Old Stone Age. Sites include a Mesolithic flint-knapping site near Westersode, whose excavation in the late 1960s yielded tens of thousands of flint pieces, as well as burial mounds in the surroundings. The bronze buckets of the “Hemmoorer type” come from the Roman Imperial Period and were discovered in the chalk pit in 1892. Most pieces are held by the Landesmuseum Hannover, while Hemmoor displays one original and four replicas. The museum also has a copy of a Jupiter statuette from Warstade. A large flint from the local Upper Chalk is part of the exhibition as well.
