About the museum
In Hemmoor, a lime and brick kiln was established from 1862 on the site by today's Kreidesee, which developed into one of the largest cement works in the world and the most important industrial company in the northern Elbe-Weser triangle. The cement was shipped from the works' own harbour on the Oste. Production ceased in 1983; the flooded chalk pit is now a well-known diving site.
The German Cement Museum keeps the memory of this industrial history alive. On open-air grounds not far from the Kreidesee, machines and equipment show how cement was extracted, fired and loaded; further pieces stand in a forge and in the locomotive shed.
The showpiece is the barge “Hemmoor 3” from 1925, which once carried cement from the Oste harbour across the Elbe to Hamburg. In its holds, an exhibition has been set up on the production of “grey gold” and on the world of work in the early 20th century. The museum is complemented by the Cement Adventure Trail on the grounds of the former factory.
