About the museum

After the ducal estate (Domäne) of Greene was dissolved in 1964, following 260 years, its buildings could be put to new use. Where farm servants had lived and dairy farming had been carried on since the early 18th century, the local history museum was created. Renovation began in 1988 with support from the then municipality of Kreiensen; the Heimatverein Greene did the entire interior fit-out on a volunteer basis. The permanent exhibition has existed since 1989.

On display are old firefighting equipment, tower clock mechanisms, wooden water pipes, historical school equipment, luxury paper and uniforms. Of particular note are the extensive porcelain painting collection by the Greene painter Clara Stromberg and mementos of honorary citizen Fritz Mackensen, co-founder of the Worpswede artists' colony. There are also tools of the blacksmith's, shoemaker's and carpenter's trades, a recreated village shop, linen, dolls, and a forestry room with hunting horns and taxidermy animals.

In the "Amtszimmer" (office room), documents and pictures show the period when Greene belonged to the Weser district of the Principality of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel, as well as the district court, Burg Greene and the more than 500-year-old postal history of the village. A former living room serves the City of Einbeck as a satellite office for civil weddings.
