About the museum

The museum's roots reach back to 1894: at that time a first exhibition on Einbeck's town history was shown in the St. Spiritus chapel south of the market square. In 1932 the collection moved to a former school building, which the Wehrmacht confiscated in 1938.

Since 1970 the museum has been housed in a three-story patrician house of 1548 on Steinweg, one of the most magnificent half-timbered buildings in the town. The richly carved facade in the Weser Renaissance style belonged to a house with brewing rights; the sun above the portal can now be found in the museum's logo. Inside, the stately hall with a two-story oriel and remnants of a painted wall covering from the mid-18th century has been preserved.

The exhibitions on three floors tell of prehistory and early history, of rich medieval Einbeck, of the brewing town whose beer gave bock beer its name, of Einbeck blueprint (Blaudruck) and of the pharmacist Friedrich Wilhelm Sertürner, who discovered morphine here. In addition there are a coin cabinet and a department on refugees and expellees from Patschkau in Silesia. In 2006 the RadHaus opened in the building, continuing the tradition of an older Einbeck bicycle museum and showing the history of the bicycle and of the local manufacturers August Stukenbrok and Heidemann-Werke.

The museum is run by the town of Einbeck and has been a registered museum in Lower Saxony since 2008. Since 2020 the trained museum dog Edgar has been part of the educational work, mainly accompanying children's and school programs.
