About the museum
The Groitzsch town tower, the remnant of the former town church of St Aegydius, has housed a first museum display since 1988. Later there was a show at Markt 15; since 1999 the Naturfreunde- und Heimatverein Groitzsch e. V. has used the present premises in the town tower, the building on Albin-Jahn-Gasse and the Alte Wache. The town museum has existed in this form since 2000; the town of Groitzsch is the operator, and the association looks after the museum.
The building on Albin-Jahn-Gasse is devoted to the history of the town, including Wiprecht II of Groitzsch and the Wiprechtsburg, as well as clubs and the fire brigade and the history of schools; a recreated classroom shows five centuries of school history. Changing exhibitions and art shows are also held here, and the association has its seat here, with an office and a local history library. The town tower contains prison cells, historical objects from churches in Groitzsch and its districts, and minerals and fossils.
The Alte Wache is devoted to the crafts and industry of the town: with a printing workshop that is also used for museum education, an exhibition on the history of Groitzsch’s baking trade and, since July 2026, a new exhibition on the town’s shoemaking history.
