About the museum
The Pegau museum was opened in October 1899 by the Verschönerungsverein (beautification society) in a room of the municipal school (Bürgerschule), which makes it one of the oldest museums in Saxony. Before that, an antiquities exhibition held the same year had given the impetus. After an interim stage in the former oat storehouse, the collection moved into the town hall attic in 1901.
Today two attic floors of the town hall, built in 1559 to 1561 to plans by Hieronymus Lotter, house the permanent exhibitions “Aus dem Leben der alten Pegauer” (From the Life of the Old Pegauers) and “Mammute – Mönche – Macher” (Mammoths – Monks – Makers). In addition, a new special exhibition with a local focus is held every year. Popular features include the reconstructed 1950s classroom and the climb of 136 steps up a 17th-century spiral staircase to the tower watchman's room, with a view over Pegau and as far as Leipzig.
During the winter season from November to April, the Pegau secondary school often uses the rooms for pupils' exhibitions. The museum also sells publications about the town and the surrounding area.
