About the museum
Friedrich Nietzsche was born on October 15, 1844, in Röcken near Lützen, the first child of the village pastor Karl Ludwig Nietzsche. After the father's early death, the family had to vacate the parsonage in 1850 and moved to Naumburg. The Romanesque village church, in which Nietzsche was baptized and in which his father preached, dates from the first half of the 12th century.
After his death in Weimar in 1900, Nietzsche was buried in the family vault on the south side of the church. For the 100th anniversary of his death, the bronze group "Röckener Bacchanal" by Klaus F. Messerschmidt commemorated him; it shows him three times at his grave.
The memorial was thoroughly restored in 2003. Since then, three rooms have been devoted to Nietzsche's childhood in Röcken, his relationship to Christianity and the history of his grave. The sponsor is the Evangelical parish of Lützener Land. The Nietzsche-Verein Röcken supports operations on a volunteer basis and collects donations for the restoration of the church roof.
