About the museum

The local history museum is on a former Halbhufengut (half-hide farm) in the middle of Großzschepa, now part of Lossatal. The small outbuilding was probably built in the 17th century, housed a schnapps distillery around 1825, served as a retirement dwelling until about 1900, and later as a farm workshop. With its gablet roof (Krüppelwalmdach) and vaulted interior, it is an architectural feature of the village.

The house was renovated in 1989 and converted into a local history museum. The exhibition spans several millennia of village history. Notable pieces include an urn burial from the local burial grounds, a wall atlas of Germany from around 1500, a land register map from 1852, and a copy of the village's first mention.

The farm barn is roughly as old as the outbuilding and in parts the oldest surviving barn in the village. It holds a collection of agricultural machinery and tools from about 1850 to 1950, including threshing and seed drill machines and grain mills, along with an exhibition on farmhouse life between 1900 and 1950.

The museum is run by the Verein Heimatmuseum Großzschepa e.V. Since 1997 it has held a museum day every June; in August there is an evening concert with wine and candlelight in the museum courtyard.
