About the museum
The museum goes back to civic commitment around 1900: after an exhibition of antiquities in the Schweizergarten, a printer set up a private local museum. In 1927 the city founded a local history museum in the Old Town Hall, which combined the collections of a historical society and the historic council holdings.
The present house at Domgasse 2 was acquired in 1941 by the Hermann-Ilgen-Stiftung and handed over to the city. The Renaissance building with its arcaded courtyard was rebuilt after the Thirty Years' War and has housed the museum since its reopening in 1948. In the GDR it was a district museum, was repeatedly reorganized, and at times was closed for long periods.
After a comprehensive renovation, the permanent exhibition last shown was created in 1998. It led across three floors from the settlement of the Wurzen region more than 6,000 years ago, through the medieval collegiate town (Stiftsstadt), to the industrial town known for carpets and biscuits. A separate cabinet honors Joachim Ringelnatz, the poet, painter and cabaret artist born in Wurzen.
Since September 2024 the house has been closed for renovation, the construction of new storage rooms and the design of a new permanent exhibition. In the meantime, educational offers for schools and kindergartens are available on request.
