About the museum

The museum began in the former flak tower "Auf den Bergen", built in 1940 for anti-aircraft defense. After the war, expellees from the former German eastern territories looked for a place for the memorabilia they had brought with them; the municipality's roughly 500 refugees and expellees first set up one room there, and later two. In late February 1977 this exhibition opened with writings, books, maps and mementos from Pomerania, Silesia, East Prussia and other areas.

In 1984 the local history museum opened in the old school; in 1998 further rooms were added at the Kulturzentrum Im Kloster 12–12a. It is run by the Museumsverein Heimatmuseum Hanerau-Hademarschen e.V. on behalf of the municipality.

On display are the East German rooms with refugee luggage, traditional costumes, an amber collection and an extensive library on the eastern territories; the Theodor Storm room in memory of the poet, who lived in Hademarschen from 1880 until his death in 1888; and areas on prehistory, cultural, church and social history, and the economic history of the region. An interactive 360-degree tour enables a virtual visit.

Permanent exhibitions

• Ostdeutsche Stuben – Flucht und Vertreibung – Refugee luggage, maps, traditional costumes and mementos from the former eastern provinces, plus a library on the eastern territories.
• Theodor-Storm-Stube – Room in memory of the poet Theodor Storm, who lived in Hademarschen from 1880 to 1888; with audio guide.
• Prähistorisches – Prehistory of the region from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age, including the burial mounds on the Hademarscher Bergen.
