About the museum

The Heimatmuseum Hemmersdorf grew out of private initiative. The farm buildings of the Engelbert Cawelius family were gradually converted into exhibition spaces after farming ended, through the owners' own labor and neighborly help. Since April 2006 the Verein Heimatmuseum Hemmersdorf e.V. has run the house, whose statutory purpose is a museum of prehistory and early history, crafts and rural life.

The foundation consists of agricultural tools and household implements from the region. Added to these are the extensive archaeological collections of founding members Johannes Monter and Hubert Regnery, together with loans from household, crafts and farming. Particularly highlighted are the geology and fossils of the Nied valley, early historical finds, and replicas of Stone Age tools and weapons from experimental archaeology.

The spacious outdoor area holds agricultural machines, pressing and distilling equipment, and models of historic buildings in the region. A field forge, a bread oven and beekeeping extend the offer. Since 2009 a large multipurpose room has been available for events and temporary exhibitions. The museum sees itself as a place to touch and take part, and twice a year it holds an educational day for children.
