About the museum
The Astorhaus was dedicated on July 9, 1854. Johann Jakob Astor of Walldorf, who had become one of the richest men of his time in America, left money in his will for the poor of his home town. With this endowment, a two-story house with neo-Gothic elements was built to plans by Ludwig Lendorff, a pupil of Weinbrenner, where elderly people and people with disabilities were cared for and needy young people were supported.
In the 20th century the building's use changed several times: in 1936 the National Socialists dissolved the foundation, after which the house served the Reichsarbeitsdienst (Reich Labor Service) and, after 1945, as a refugee shelter. Later the town acquired the building. Today it houses a childcare facility, the registry office and the museum of the Vereinigung Walldorfer Heimatfreunde, founded in 1965, which has been housed in the building since 1970.
The exhibition spreads across three floors and more than 400 square meters: Astor rooms in Biedermeier style, rural living quarters and tools, religious art, fire brigade history, porcelain and pewter, ground finds and, in the vaulted cellar, fossils of the Muschelkalk sea as well as rooms on tobacco, hops, brewing and viticulture in Walldorf.
