About the museum
The Gerth Tower was built around 1450 and first mentioned in 1716 as a "Speicher" (storehouse); the Gerth estate itself can be traced in the hereditary rent register of 1493. It takes its name from its last owner, Richard Gerth, and is considered the oldest unchanged building in St. Egidien. In 1944–45 it served as an air-raid shelter.
Since October 1979, a Heimatstube (local history room) set up by nature and local history enthusiasts has been housed here. In 1993 it was renamed the Heimatmuseum (local history museum) and systematically expanded, including the adjoining barn, which had been rebuilt after a fire in 1930.
Across ten rooms covering 423 square meters, the permanent exhibition shows more than 2,000 objects from about 400 years, including a skat card cleaning machine, a collection of orthopedic horseshoes, a rocking bathtub with a steam generator and a Bienenpfeifer. Craftsmen, tradespeople and farmers have donated many of their old tools and machines. The volunteer local history friends care for the collection and organize tours.
