Turmmuseum Geyer

Municipal museum in the 42-meter-high defense and watch tower of Geyer, with mining and town history, minerals and bells across seven floors.

Opening hoursAdmission €5

About the museum

The defense and watch tower of Geyer dates back to the 14th century and is 42 meters high. It was built in two stages: around 1560 the master builder Hieronymus Lotter added an octagonal superstructure to the square base. The tower watchman once lived up here with his family.

Since 1952 the tower has housed the Städtisches Museum (municipal museum), one of the largest tower museums of its kind in Germany. Across seven floors, it covers the mining and town history of Geyer. On display are local minerals, a working model of the Geyersberg mountain, a Posamentierstube (trimmings room) with trimmings from the 18th century, and the Lotterstube (Lotter room) with a valuable collection of pewter.

The bells "Frieden" (Peace) and "Einheit" (Unity) also hang in the tower and ring together with the chimes of St. Laurentius Church. At the very top is the Heimatstube (local history room) with a wide view over the town's rooftops; it is also used as a wedding room. For young visitors there is a discovery tour with the tower boy Albin and their own tower pass with stamps.
