Heimatmuseum Langenzenn
Local history museum in a Romanesque former cemetery chapel with dinosaur tracks, Stone Age finds, and evidence of Langenzenn's town history.
About the museum
The building by the town church is one of the oldest in Langenzenn: its sandstone lower floor shows Romanesque architectural forms and probably dates from around or before 1250. Until 1622 it served as a cemetery chapel dedicated to the Archangel Michael. After the cemetery was relocated, it was converted into a Latin school, and the teacher lived on the upper floor until 1815.
The property then changed hands several times until the town took it over in 1963 and briefly housed the town library there. From 1973, the Heimatverein Langenzenn converted the building into a museum, largely through its own labor; on June 11, 1976, the Heimatmuseum was ceremoniously opened.
The exhibition invites visitors on a walk through the history of the town and the Zenngrund. It ranges from rocks from the Zenn and Farrnbach valleys, including uranium ore from the Dillenberg, and dinosaur tracks more than 200 million years old, through Stone Age arrowheads and stone axes, to objects of town history. Because the collection grew, the association also uses the nearby Fronveste, a former town jail built in 1737 to plans by Johann David Steingruber, where the historic town pharmacy is shown, among other things.
