About the museum
Behind the museum is the Altertums-Gauverein Tegernsee, founded by local citizens a good hundred years after the dissolution of the monastery. The collection has had its home in the former parsonage since 1999; the museum is run entirely by volunteers.
Around 850 objects are on display across 17 rooms. The themes range from the Benedictine monastery, established in the 8th century, through the secularization of 1803 and the Wittelsbach era from 1817 to the development of tourism. A special focus is on the many artists of all disciplines who settled on Lake Tegernsee over the past two centuries. There are also the valley’s geological features such as Tegernsee marble and the iodine-sulfur deposits, as well as monastic art, farmhouse furniture, craftsmen’s tools and clockworks by Johann Mannhardt.
