About the museum

The Museumshof opened in May 1969. It began with the main building of the Aschen farm from Hüllhorst, a richly decorated hall house from 1739 that was dismantled and rebuilt in the Siekertal. Originally only this one building was planned; after the donation of a tenant farmer's house, however, the site grew step by step into a complete farmstead.

By 1993, the tenant farmer's house from 1654 from Exter, a bakehouse from Dehme, a barn from 1803, and a granary from 1792 were added, all moved from the surrounding area. A little further down at the Osterbach, a farm water mill from 1772, demonstrated by volunteer millers, has stood since the mid-1980s. Behind the main building, a farm garden lined with boxwood was laid out in the early 1970s; it is now being redesigned in a more natural style.

The furnished houses show living and working in the countryside in the 19th century, including cigar making as a typical side occupation, basket weaving, beekeeping, and the workshops of the carpenter and wheelwright. The museum is run by the city of Bad Oeynhausen, supported by the Freundeskreis Museumshof (friends' circle) and several volunteer groups; markets, a garden festival, and a Low German church service are part of the annual program.
