Opening hours

About the museum

The Heimatmuseum Manderscheid was opened on 8 June 1984 in the presence of former Federal President Walter Scheel, initially in the former elementary school on the Burberg. In 1995 it moved to its present location opposite the Old Town Hall. The stately residential house from the first half of the 19th century was formerly used as an inn, guesthouse and farm. Today numerous exhibits and documents show the more than 1,000-year history of Manderscheid and its region.

The tour leads through the rooms of the house: the picture gallery displays works by local artists, with a painting by Friedrich August de Leuw as its showpiece; the room also serves as a wedding room. Another room traces the path from weaving village to spa town, and another the Eifel iron industry, with taken plates and a bell from 1746. The coin cabinet and the Counts' room recall the Counts of Manderscheid and their castles.

Further stops include a farmhouse kitchen and bedroom, a salon, a schoolroom, the Hirsch-Apotheke pharmacy, a shoemaker's workshop and a display case on the writer Clara Viebig. Outdoors, the stable and barn show agriculture of earlier times; a fire engine pump from 1835 and a wine press are put to use at festivals.
