Vulkanmuseum Daun

Museum in the old Daun district office on volcanism in the Eifel and worldwide – with landscape models, rocks, and interactive stations.

Opening hoursAdmission from €3 Wheelchair accessible

About the museum

The Eifel-Vulkanmuseum is housed in the former district office in Daun and is run by the Vulkaneifel district. It came about as a complement to the geo-trails in Hillesheim, Manderscheid, and Gerolstein and is part of the Natur- und Geopark Vulkaneifel. Together with venues such as the Maarmuseum in Manderscheid and the Vulkanhaus Strohn, it forms a network of museums that explain the region's geological uniqueness.

The tour begins on the grand scale: a world map in the entrance area explains the movement of the tectonic plates and lights up the currently active volcanoes, and a computer simulation shows the position of the continents in past and future geological ages. Rock samples illustrate how rocks form and transform.

In the section on Eifel volcanism, landscape models show the volcanically shaped West Eifel, the formation of maars and cinder cones, and the different types of volcanoes in the region; at a cinder cone model, guests can trigger an eruption themselves. A wall map links the museum with the geological routes and facilities of the Vulkaneifel. In the basement is the training center of the Geo-Zentrum with media and teaching materials on geology.

The museum is open during the season from spring to the end of October; tours, also combined with an excursion to the maars, can be booked year-round.

Highlights

  • Cinder cone model on which a volcanic eruption can be triggered
  • World map on plate tectonics with glowing active volcanoes
  • Landscape models of maars and cinder cones of the West Eifel
  • Original rocks and minerals from the Vulkaneifel
  • Tour with maar excursion can be booked

Permanent exhibitions

  • Vulkanismus weltweit – Maps, simulations, and rock samples explain plate tectonics, continental drift, active volcanoes, and the rock cycle.
  • Eifel-Vulkanismus – Landscape models, images, and original rocks show how maars, cinder cones, and other volcanic forms of the West Eifel came about; an eruption can be reenacted on a model.
