About the museum
The Vulkanhaus is located in Strohn in the Vulkaneifel, a landscape of maars and cinder cones. It is run by the local municipality of Strohn and funded with European Union money. The scientific concept comes from the Rhineland-Palatinate State Office for Monument Preservation (geological monument preservation), and the exhibition architecture was designed by Bernd Freihaut and Tine Kaiser.
The permanent exhibition explains basic volcanic processes using examples from the surrounding area. The ground floor covers the structure of the Earth, magma, lava flows and volcanic gases; the upper floor covers the magma chamber, maars, lava bombs, cinder cones and rocks from the depths. Many stations are designed as hands-on walls, listening stations and walk-in rooms; a highlight is the large lava fissure wall. On the forecourt, a geological time trail and play stations invite visitors to try things out.
In Strohn itself lies the roughly 120-ton Strohn lava bomb, which broke loose from the quarry face during a blast in 1969 and was later moved to its present location.
