About the museum
The Schweiger villa was built in 1923/24 for Josef Schweiger, co-owner of a timber company, with echoes of Munich Jugendstil (Art Nouveau). After the death of his widow in 1987, the house passed to the firm Infraplan, which was not allowed to demolish it because of heritage protection, and in 1992 gave it to the market municipality. The Verein Heimatmuseum Markt Schwaben e. V. (local history museum association), founded in 1990, received the house under a usage agreement in 1997; the first open house day took place on August 1, 1997.
For over 25 years, volunteers gradually set up the 15 rooms, with about 450 square meters of living space, as a museum. The final completion was celebrated in July 2024.
The rooms cover, among other things, archaeology from the Ice Age to the Bavarian period, with grave reconstructions; the castle and palace of Schwaben with Wening engravings; costume; a post office parlor; printing and weaving; a classroom; products of the Schwaben porcelain factory; a shoemaker's workshop; and a kitchen around 1920. Two rooms show contemporary history from 1900 to 2000.
