About the museum
The museum is housed in the former 12th-century moated castle on the Amtsfreiheit. The Heimatverein Moringen, founded in 1921 under the name "Jung-Niedersachsen", wanted to preserve valuable historical craft items for the public and used the castle complex for this purpose.
In 1977 the conversion of the Heimatmuseum in the old moated castle began, followed in 1982 by the conversion of the castle cellar. The association designed the museum and handed it over to the town of Moringen in 1981.
Around 1,000 exhibits are displayed on roughly 900 square metres of exhibition space. They document traces of life in Moringen and the surrounding area: people, work, houses and landscape of past centuries. The holdings also include a collection of banners belonging to the association.
