About the museum

The Heimatmuseum of the City of Northeim is in the Gothic half-timbered house St. Spiritus by the Münster (minster). The building was first documented in 1478, extended to the south around 1500, and served as a hospital where respected Northeim residents found shelter in old age.

The permanent exhibition covers the Counts of Northeim and the monastery of St. Blasien, the council and constitutional history of the town, crafts and guilds, and money and measures, with coins, weights, and measures. Townscapes show how the place has changed; a separate section is devoted to the railway, which made Northeim a transport hub from 1854 on. A colonial goods shop offers insight into economic history, and another section covers political developments from 1848 to 1948. The Neustädter Heimatstube (Neustadt local heritage room) has been integrated into the house as a section.

A special highlight is the Northeim-Höckelheim coin hoard, discovered in 1991, with over 17,000 medieval silver coins; it is the largest surviving coin hoard in northern Germany and has been displayed in the vaulted cellar since May 2004. Since April 2013 there has also been an archaeology section, which displays the Edesheim cult drum as an original.
