About the museum

Fredelsloh on the edge of the Solling is considered a potters' village: for almost a thousand years, clay has been worked here without interruption. To make this tradition visible, the Geschichts- und Heimatverein Töpferdorf Fredelsloh (history and local heritage association), founded in 1996, set up the Keramikum, which opened in 2011 as an exhibition and activity house. The construction was carried out mainly through volunteer work and craft businesses from the region; the association also has its headquarters in the building.

On two floors the exhibition tells how ceramics were used throughout history, focusing on the earthenware for which Fredelsloh is known. On view are mainly replicas of medieval vessels – round-bottomed pots, jugs, mugs, cups, and cooking pots – reconstructed from soil finds in the surrounding area. Added to this are topics from the village and collegiate foundation history as well as connections between old pottery techniques and today's ceramic applications. A pottery workshop is also part of the house.

A special feature is the medieval kiln, rebuilt according to excavation findings: since 2006 it has been fired up once a year, usually in August, and the vessels fired in it are made beforehand in the museum itself. Since 2022 a museum game as an app with augmented reality has complemented the tour for young guests. In 2026 the museum celebrates its fifteenth anniversary.
