About the museum

The house on Mühlenpfad was built in 1842 as a farmhouse with an inn. In the mid-1990s the municipality of Tholey acquired the building and, after extensive renovation, opened it in 1997 as a village community hall. Today it houses a restaurant, an event hall, and the municipality's local history museum, which is set up and run on a volunteer basis by the Interessengemeinschaft Ortsgeschichte Neipel (local history interest group).

The museum's origins lie in a long tradition of collecting by local residents who were interested in geological, prehistoric, and historical topics. Because Neipel remained fairly remote until the mid-20th century, many everyday objects were also preserved.

The exhibition presents regional history in several sections: finds from prehistory, early history, and geology; the agriculture of the early 20th century; village crafts such as shoemaking and beekeeping; and the domestic culture of past centuries, along with spinning and weaving. The museum team leads visitors through the rooms and tells the stories behind the original objects. The house is a member of the Saarland Museum Association.
