About the museum
Two priests from Saarland, Paul Ludwig and Matthias Marx, came across the work of the French artist Jean Lurçat (1892–1966) at exhibitions in 1992 and began collecting it. After Ludwig's death, Marx founded the Paul-Ludwig-Stiftung "Jean Lurçat" in 2000, which supports the collection and financed the setting up of a museum. The Jean-Lurçat-Gesellschaft Eppelborn e. V. (founded in 1999) runs the museum.
The museum opened on 8 September 2002 on the ground floor of a former girls' vocational school in Eppelborn and uses around 250 square metres there. With the estate of the artist's widow Simone Lurçat, who died in 2009, the holdings grew considerably.
Today the collection is regarded as the most significant of its kind in the German-speaking world. It comprises more than 400 works from all creative periods: painting, ceramics, tapestries, watercolours and lithographs. Lurçat became known above all for reviving tapestry in collaboration with the Aubusson manufactory. Operations are largely in the hands of volunteers, which is why the museum is open only two days a week.
