Heimatmuseum Nellingen
Local history museum in the old schoolhouse of Nellingen on the Alb: rural crafts, farm life and the Amstetten–Laichingen narrow-gauge railway.
About the museum
The impetus for the Nellingen local history museum was the 600th anniversary of the town's market rights in 1972. The municipality and the local chapter of the Swabian Alb Association then collected objects from the village; the museum opened in April 1975.
It is housed in the former schoolhouse of 1927 on Schulplatz in the middle of the village. In the late 1980s the building was remodeled and the exhibition space considerably enlarged.
The collection shows how people on the Alb plateau lived and made their living: farm implements, furniture and household goods, a furnished farmhouse parlor with Alb traditional costumes, and workshops of a cooper, saddler, shoemaker and weaver. There are also fossils, Roman shards and an early medieval spear.
The basement is devoted to the narrow-gauge railway between Amstetten and Laichingen, which ran through Nellingen from 1900 to 1985. Among other things, the tools used to build the line in the late 19th century are on display.
