About the museum
The Museum im Ursulastift in Gussenstadt opened in 1911 and is considered the oldest museum of its kind in Württemberg. It was founded by local historian Georg Thierer in a building made available by his brother Valentin. The first exhibition room has been preserved in its 1911 condition to this day and is known as the "Museum im Museum" (museum within the museum).
Across about 280 square meters in seven rooms, the house shows living conditions on the Swabian Alb in the 19th and early 20th centuries: furnishings of parlors and bedrooms, everyday objects from house and farm, costumes, evidence of Protestant piety and memorial pictures marking the stages of life. There are also native animals, fossils, toys and the Gussenstadter Obstkabinett (Gussenstadt fruit cabinet), a collection of local fruit varieties.
The museum also includes a smithy (Museumsschmiede) that can be opened on request. Once a year there is a special exhibition on a changing theme.
