About the museum
The Heimatmuseum Neukirchen lies behind St. Nicholas Church on the market square, in two neighboring half-timbered houses. The oldest parts of one date from around 1600, while the other was built in 1768 and was formerly used as a Latin school. A recreated classroom refers to this use.
The museum grew out of the initiative of committed citizens, from which the museum association emerged; members of the Bund der Vertriebenen (Federation of Expellees) also played a significant role. Today it shows more than 6,000 objects in 15 rooms on the former way of life and work in the Schwalm farming and craft town.
On display are Schwalm costumes and embroidery, Neukirchen bobbin lace, a living and sleeping room from around 1900, kitchen and household utensils, toys, and finds from prehistory and early history. More than ten craft trades are represented with workshops, including tanner, shoemaker, saddler, stonemason, cooper, and blacksmith. A separate area commemorates the history and culture of the expellees.
