About the museum
The collection goes back to the history and antiquities association founded by citizens of Alsfeld on September 9, 1897. As part of the renovation of the old town, the Regionalmuseum was set up in 1975 to 1977 in two patrician houses on the Rittergasse, the Minnigerodehaus and the Neurathhaus of 1688. Today the history and museum association runs the house together with the town of Alsfeld.
For many years the museum has been closed for a heritage-compliant renovation of the buildings and is being reconceived. The Neurathhaus reopened in 2022 for the town's 800th anniversary; its entrance is in the former carriage gateway. The Minnigerodehaus is not yet accessible because of the conversion; it has an original spiral staircase whose 8.12-meter-high newel is carved from a single oak trunk. The collections, around 12,000 inventoried objects, are stored in a central depot run by volunteers.
A new permanent exhibition is planned with the sections "StadtGeschichten" (city stories) on the emergence and development of the town, "ArbeitsPlätze" (workplaces) on economic history, covering tobacco and pipes, brewing, furniture and chair production and the hat industry, and "GlaubensFragen" (questions of faith) on religious life. In addition, cabinets are to show special holdings. The museum barn with courtyard serves as an event venue.
