About the museum

The Holzburg village museum opened in 1959 in the barn of the parsonage, built in 1728. Pastor Heinz Metz crowned his life's work with it by assembling a collection on the everyday life and crafts of the Schwalm region. The parish ran the museum until 1972, after which the Schwälmer Heimatbund took it over. Since 2008 the museum has been run by the Museumsverein, an association founded specifically for this purpose.

The 16 rooms of the parsonage barn show the world of a Schwalm farmhouse from the 18th to the early decades of the 20th century: field and household work, the kitchen, living and sleeping rooms, and workshops such as those of a shoemaker or a wheelwright. The collection also includes Schwalm traditional costumes, which document the crafts and customs of the region.

Thanks to the donation of the former Wahl inn to the municipality of Schrecksbach, the association gained more rooms from 2008. They house exhibition spaces on village history, a library, the museum shop, a museum café with a taproom and bakehouse, and a hall with 52 costume dolls. The complex also includes the fully equipped Schreiber forge.
