About the museum
Willingshausen in the Schwalm region is considered the oldest artists' colony in Europe. It began with the Baltic officer Gerhardt Wilhelm von Reutern, who, after losing his right arm at the Battle of Leipzig, recovered with the von Schwertzell family from 1814, began to draw, and portrayed villagers in Schwalm costume. The decisive boost came in 1824 from Ludwig Emil Grimm, a professor at the Kassel Academy and brother of the fairy-tale collectors, who came for landscape studies and supported Reutern.
The association "Malerstübchen Willingshausen e. V." preserves the legacy of this artists' colony in its museum in the historic Gerhardt-von-Reutern House. The collection brings together graphic works and paintings from all periods of the colony, including works by Gerhardt von Reutern, Ludwig Emil Grimm, Carl Bantzer, Hans von Volkmann, Heinrich Giebel, Wilhelm Thielmann, Heinrich Otto and Hugo Mühlig.
Besides the collection, the association mounts changing exhibitions every year and organizes the International Painters' Symposium Willingshausen, which takes place for the eighth time in 2026. A museum café and a shop with Willingshausen booklets and books round off the visit. According to the association, an expanded museum concept is in preparation.
