About the museum

The museum is housed in the Old School of 1849 in the middle of the village, opposite St. Laurentius Church. For over a century the building served as a sexton's and school house; in 1894 a larger classroom was added, which is now used as a hall. After the new school was built in 1950, the Old School was still used for a few years for cooking lessons and as a teacher's residence.

The Heimatverein Nienhagen was founded in 1985 and initially occupied three rooms in the basement. Conversion into the local history museum began in 2001, and in November 2002 the municipality handed the building over to the association.

The "hands-on museum" shows on the ground floor an oil room with a large model of the Nienhagen oil field, developed from 1907 to 1943, as well as a spinning room, a weaving room with a working loom, a local history room with a photo collection, a laundry room and a museum kitchen. The upper floor deals with rural everyday life, school, crafts, toys and electrical engineering. Outbuildings with a smithy and a woodworking shop, as well as an open area for large equipment, round out the offering.
