About the museum
The Oberammergau Museum opened in 1910 and has been preserved in its original presentation to a large extent. It is regarded as one of the oldest and most significant cultural history museums in Bavaria and is run by the municipality of Oberammergau.
The collection reflects the village's wood-carving tradition, more than 500 years old: nativity scenes, including the Historic Church Nativity Scene, painted toys, genre carvings, saint figures, crucifixes and modern sculpture from the 17th century to the present. There are also depictions of the village's social and economic history and individual artists' biographies.
The early history department shows finds from a Raetian burnt-offering site at the Döttenbichl dating from around 100 BC to 50 AD, including Roman weapons. Seven exhibits from the reverse glass painting collection of the Murnau brewmaster Johann Krötz, which served as inspiration for the painters of the Blue Rider, are on display. At experimental stations, visitors can explore wood as a material.
