About the museum

The museum is housed in the former forester's house on the west side of Unterammergau's village square, a listed two-story building from the second half of the 18th century.

In 2002, the volunteer Historischer Arbeitskreis Unterammergau first set up two rooms here on whetstone making. This craft supported the village into the 19th century; the stones for sharpening scythes were sold in large parts of Central Europe. Between 2006 and 2012, further rooms were added, creating a general local history museum that the association still looks after today.

On display are tools from the abandoned quarries and grinding mills, a model of a whetstone mill, and a reconstructed Beckhütte, as well as agriculture and forestry with grass carts and wooden sleds, flax growing and linen weaving, tourism, trades, and sports. Fossils and archaeological finds – including Roman coins from the Schleifmühlklamm gorge – tell of early settlement; on the upper floor, a historic bedroom has been furnished.

Changing exhibitions complement the permanent exhibition. Outside the building, the working group offers historical village tours as well as walks to the former whetstone quarries.
