About the museum

The museum is housed in the former general store of the Bierling family in Bad Bayersoien. The Bierlings were a merchant family that shaped the place for generations; as salt factors they managed the storehouses in which the salt transported along the Rottstraße was kept, and they supplied the population of the surrounding area with goods.

The tour shows how the family worked and lived: the counting house of the trading firm is fully preserved with its furnishings and inventory, and the adjoining living rooms convey upper-middle-class living in the countryside. Further sections are devoted to local history and to the crafts once practiced in the village; on display are tools of the blacksmith, wheelwright, carpenter, saddler, shoemaker and stonemason. A schoolroom also belongs to the museum.

A documentation explains the formation and use of the surrounding moor, including peat cutting. An extensive collection on popular piety goes back to the collecting passion of Martha Echtler and includes hand-colored copperplate prints, reverse-glass paintings, convent handiwork, pilgrimage souvenirs and sculptures. A virtual tour of the house is also available.
