About the museum

The house on Hauptstraße was built in 1758 as the town hall of the market town of Pfaffenhausen and for a long time was the center of public life, with municipal council meetings and court hearings. In the 19th century a grain market hall, the Schranne, was set up on the ground floor; before that, the space was used for theater performances, among other things. In the mid-20th century the interior was extensively redesigned. Until 1978 the building remained the seat of the municipal administration and the mayor.

In 1986 the local heritage society “Freunde Pfaffenhausens” (Friends of Pfaffenhausen) took over the empty building, spent years restoring it, renovated the interior and turned it into a heritage house and meeting place. The Schranne now serves as an event room for exhibitions, readings and concerts.

The permanent display at the back of the Schranne includes a village forge with a bellows from 1803 and an old shoemaker's workshop. Further rooms commemorate the local historian Julius Sesar, the architect Richard Berndl, the shopping customs of earlier times (general store) and the village's war veterans (veterans' room).
