About the museum
The Kirchheim in Schwaben local history museum is housed in the town hall on the Marktplatz, a three-story building from 1741/42 designed by master builder Joseph Meitinger, with a curved Baroque gable, small turrets and an onion dome. Over time the building also served as a grain hall (Schranne), a jail, a teacher's residence and a school. The museum occupies the third floor and the attic and, according to the Bavarian state agency for non-state museums, has existed since 1973.
On display are finds from prehistory and early history, art and folk culture, evidence of local and settlement history, and tools and equipment of local crafts and agriculture. A special feature is the collection of Tertiary fossil leaf flora from Breitenbrunn in the Unterallgäu.
