40 Jahre Heimatmuseum Pfuhl

Exhibition in the Museumsstadel marking the 40th anniversary of the Heimatmuseum Pfuhl.

About the museum

The idea for a museum for Pfuhl arose in the 1980s from the circle of the carnival society “Pfuhler Seejockel”, whose costume group had gathered many original pieces. The city of Neu-Ulm initially rejected a museum of its own; eventually it was agreed to set up a department of the municipal local history museum in the former, listed Pfuhl town hall. In November 1986 it opened under the title “Handwerk und dörfliches Leben” (Crafts and Village Life), with the exhibition “Vom Flachs zum Leinen” (From Flax to Linen).

A year later, in 1987, committed citizens founded the Verein Museumsfreunde Pfuhl (Pfuhl Museum Friends), which has designed and looked after the exhibitions ever since; the city of Neu-Ulm is the sponsor. The renovated half-timbered house from the 18th century offers about 200 square meters of space. Since 1997 the attached museum barn, about 300 square meters in size, has been part of the complex; its upper floor was completed in 2000.

In the old town hall, rural living from about 1880 to 1950 is shown with a kitchen, living room and bedroom, along with an original classroom, the Christian Frank collection of miniature models of carts and machines, a laundry room in the vaulted cellar and, since 2022, a church room. The museum barn focuses on crafts, flax processing and weaving.
