About the museum

The local history museum tells the story of two Stuttgart districts, Plieningen and Birkach, on the Fildern plateau. Until 2009 it was housed in the Old Town Hall and had to be cleared out during its renovation. In 2014 it reopened in the neighboring historic tithe barn at the Mönchhof.

The museum stages six characteristic rooms. In the “Felder” (fields) and the barn, everything revolves around agriculture, since Filder cabbage shaped Plieningen and made the village famous. The center of the “Werkstatt” (workshop) is the historic cap-making business Schad, which tells of the often hard working life in the villages. Further rooms are devoted to the many village inns and to the students from Hohenheim, the “Rathaus” (town hall) with documents on the history of incorporations, and a “Küche” (kitchen) with historical equipment and forgotten recipes. A view of the “vertical village” Asemwald shows the growth of the city districts in the 20th century.

From the Mönchhof you can look into a display depot with 26 objects, which tells the local history from A to Z and occasionally hosts special exhibitions. The museum belongs to the museum family of the StadtPalais – Museum für Stuttgart.
