About the museum

The zoological collections of the University of Hohenheim go back to a largely forestry- and agriculture-related collection of the 19th century. Around 1870, the institute's then director, Prof. G. Jäger, laid the foundation with spirit specimens of birds and fish. Between 1886 and 1932, among other things, a bird collection and insect biologies were added.

The veterinary part consists mainly of holdings from the Tierärztliche Hochschule Stuttgart (Stuttgart Veterinary College). After its closure on October 1, 1912, Prof. Sohnle, holder of the chair of veterinary medicine at Hohenheim, was able to secure large parts of the anatomical-physiological collection as well as the horseshoeing, obstetrics and surgery collections for Hohenheim.

The museum is housed in rooms beneath the dome of Hohenheim Palace. In the zoological section, notable items include the largely native bird collection, the insect biologies of Stuttgart master hairdresser Carl Mühl (1869–1955), and the roughly 200-year-old Hohenheim wood library (Xylothek) with 198 volumes. The museum is currently closed until further notice.
