About the museum
The Rischbachstollen belongs to the former St. Ingbert hard coal mine, whose beginnings go back to the early 17th century. The mine initially belonged to the Counts of von der Leyen, later to the Kingdom of Bavaria. From 1842 the A adit was driven towards Rischbach, with the breakthrough in 1852.
Main operations in the Rischbach ended in 1957, and the St. Ingbert mine was finally closed in 1959. In 1990 former miners and friends of mining founded the Besucherbergwerk Rischbachstollen association, and in 1994 the Saarbrücken mining authority approved its operation as a show mine.
The association’s roughly 100 members, of whom a small circle are active, maintain the adit, machinery, colliery building and grounds on a voluntary basis and keep up miners’ customs. Visitors experience the mine on tours that end with a ride on the old mine railway; numerous exhibits are on display in the colliery building and on the grounds.
