About the museum

The Heimatmuseum Reilingen opened in 1986 for the municipality's 700th anniversary celebrations. It uses the second floor and storerooms of the former inn "Zum Löwen" on Hauptstraße. It is run by the association Freunde Reilinger Geschichte (Friends of Reilingen History), which set up the museum and continues to run it.

As early as 1990, the working group "Heimatpflege Nordbaden" awarded the municipality a promotion prize in the competition "Vorbildliches Heimatmuseum" (model local history museum).

The exhibition focuses on rural crafts, trades and domestic life. The local history section presents evidence from prehistory and early history, including the roughly 250,000-year-old skull of "Homo erectus Reilingensis", as well as documents on the village and Burg Wersau (Wersau Castle). On the second floor there is a historically furnished apartment with parlor, bedroom, kitchen and pantry, as well as an old general store. In the attic are tools of craft and trade from the early days of industrialization. Agricultural exhibits are in the carriage house (Remise) and an outbuilding in the courtyard; an old schoolroom recalls earlier lessons.
