About the museum

The Zonengrenz-Museum Helmstedt documents the postwar history of the district, which for decades was shaped by the inner-German border. Over roughly 100 kilometers, the border sealed off the district's territory to the east, separating families, neighbors and businesses. The museum is housed in the classicist building at Südertor, formerly the seat of the district administration. It is operated by the Landkreis Helmstedt (Helmstedt district).

The exhibition is arranged in five sections. It shows how the division unfolded, the construction of the border installations with a model and original sections of fence, a homemade ladder with which an escape succeeded, and the economic consequences of the closure. Symbols of the connection between West and East are a burned-out bus from the B 1 and an American military train escort car standing in front of the building. A large model shows the Helmstedt/Marienborn border crossing, and photos recall the opening of the border in November 1989.

In the basement, objects and panels cover the postwar years from 1945 to 1952. Another section gathers border art from East and West.
