Heimatmuseum Schwarzes Tor
Local history museum in a smallholder's house from 1803 in St. Georgen with an original smoke kitchen, farmhouse parlor, and traditional Black Forest crafts.
About the museum
The “Schwarzes Tor” (Black Gate) was built in 1803 as a smallholder's house after an earlier building on the same site had been destroyed by lightning; a house on this spot is probably documented as early as the 17th century. From 1806 the building was divided between two owners until the company Tobias Baeuerle acquired the entire property in 1912.
In 1978 the company gave the house to the town of St. Georgen free of charge. The Förderverein Schwarzes Tor (friends' association), founded in 1987, secured its preservation: with a great deal of volunteer work and support from the town, the heritage authorities, and the Denkmalstiftung (heritage foundation), the building was restored and opened as a local history museum in 1995. Today it is run jointly by the town, the Deutsches Phonomuseum, and volunteer museum guides.
The exhibition is devoted to rural life and local crafts. On view are an original Black Forest smoke kitchen without a chimney, a farmhouse parlor with a tiled stove, a bedroom with a canopy bed, and a costume room with the typical Schäppel (bridal crown headdress). Two rooms present local clockmaking, while the threshing floor holds farm implements and two hand looms. Workshops of a cooper, locksmith, and shoemaker, along with examples of straw plaiting, clock-face painting, pottery, basket weaving, shingle making, and the boring of wooden water pipes, complete the tour.
