About the museum

The Schwarzwaldmuseum has been located in the center of Triberg since 1936, just a few steps from the waterfalls. Across more than 1,600 square meters it shows how people in the Black Forest once lived and worked, combining the everyday, craft and economic history of the region.

The collection includes Black Forest clocks from four centuries, costumes, wood carvings, straw-plaiting work and original workshops, including a clockmaker's workshop. The self-playing music automatons and orchestrions are especially well known, as is one of the largest hurdy-gurdy collections in Europe. A walk-in mine tunnel with rare minerals, a model landscape of the Black Forest Railway, bobsleds and toboggans, and the world's first electric ski lift round off the tour.

In the area of the museum café, an exhibition is devoted to the Triberg Fasnet: more than 25 figures are on show, some of them interactive, along with films about the custom. Other themes include a collection of SABA radios, works by the carver Schnitzersepp, and the history of the town and lordship of Triberg. The house also contains the town's tourist information.
