About the museum
The gallery on Hauptstraße in Lauterbach is dedicated to the painter Wilhelm Kimmich, who created an exceptionally broad body of work over more than six decades: countless drawings and around 2,000 paintings. His art has its roots in Black Forest painting. His early work follows in the tradition of Hans Thoma and of the Gutach painters Wilhelm Hasemann and Curt Liebich; after the war Kimmich opened himself to the means of classical modernism and from the mid-1950s onward renewed the image of the Black Forest.
The gallery is run by the Kunstverein Wilhelm Kimmich together with the municipality of Lauterbach. Besides works by its namesake, it regularly presents changing exhibitions by other artists, often in dialogue with Kimmich's work. The painter's catalogues raisonnés are available in the gallery shop.
